Apple has released tvOS 12.4 for Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K. Apple has not shared any release notes on what’s new in the update, however there are a number of security fixes included. The update is available over-the-air for compatible models.
Usually when Apple does not share release notes, it means that the updates are very minor. These could include security fixes or under-the-hood stability and performance improvements.
To upgrade to the new release on your fourth-generation or fifth-generation Apple TV, go to Settings > System > Software Update. You can also enable automatic updates on this screen so future updates are automatically downloaded and installed to your Apple TV.
The company has also released Apple TV Software 7.3.1 for third-generation Apple TV.
The last major Apple TV software update was tvOS 12.3. It shipped with the new TV app with Channels support. Channels lets users sign up for on-demand third-party services like HBO and Starz, right from within the TV app. Users can also browse their iTunes movies and TV shows library from the TV app, complete with 4K HDR support. For sports enthusiasts, Apple has created a section which allows catching up on daily updates and highlights, as well as live content. Users can also sign up for notifications for sports updates. Lastly, a Kids section was also added to the TV app which contains curated contented aimed just at kids.
The company is currently beta testing its upcoming tvOS 13 update with developers and public beta testers. tvOS 13 will ship with Apple Arcade, support for PlayStation 4 and Xbox controllers, 4K HDR underwater screensavers, a redesigned home screen, picture-in-picture video and Control Center with multi-user support. tvOS 13 will be released this fall, and will be compatible with Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K models.
