tvOS 12.3 beta 5 released for Apple TV HD and 4K – features and changes

Apple has released tvOS 12.3 beta 5 for Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K models. The new update ships with the new TV app that Apple demoed during their March 25 event. Apple has also released Software 7.3 Beta for the third-generation Apple TV model, which was last updated in 2017.

tvOS 12.3

The previous Apple TV update was tvOS 12.2 and it only had under-the-hood improvements and not noticeable features or changes. tvOS 12.3 is a major update, specifically because it ties in to Apple’s streaming subscription service plans: Apple TV+. Apple announced a new TV app, which is part of the new tvOS update. The TV app not only contains Apple’s own iTunes content (movies and TV shows, depending on where you live) to buy or rent, it also has channels to allow you to stream content from other sources like HBO, Starz and the likes.

Because of the importance of their streaming service, Apple TV app will also be available on TVs by popular manufacturers like Samsung, LG and Sony, as well as on Roku and Fire TV. Apple has even revived their outdated third-generation Apple TV with a new software update, to get more people to use the new TV app, and the upcoming Apple TV+ service.

Update: tvOS 12.3 and Apple TV Software Update 7.3 are now available for all users.

To download and install the new tvOS 12.3 beta, you would need an Apple Developer Center membership. You would need to use Xcode to install the beta, which makes the whole process cumbersome. However, Apple also released public beta builds for tvOS, so it is recommend to wait and opt for those instead. Installing tvOS public beta is as easy as enabling ‘Get Beta Updates‘ from Settings > System > Software Updates > Update Software on Apple TV.

Apple is also beta testing iOS 12.3, watchOS 5.2.1 and macOS Mojave 10.14.5.
