Apple has released new AirPods with new H1 chip, 50 percent more talk time, hands-free Hey Siri and an optional wireless charging case. The new H1 chip replaces the W1 chip in first generation AirPods, and delivers faster connections, improved performance and more talk time. It also enables hands-free Hey Siri support on the new AirPods.
Apple has introduced the much awaited wireless charging case, which was originally announced during iPhone X’s launch event back in September 2017. The case works with Qi-compatible charging mats. There is a new LED on the case which shows the charging status at a glance. Both the standard and wireless charging cases provide 24 hour of battery charge. The cases are also capable of providing 3 hours of listening time and 2 hours of talk time on AirPods, with just 15 minutes of charge. A full charge gives 5 hours of listening time and 3 hours of talk time.
The new H1 chip is a custom-designed Apple chip which powers the audio sub-system in new AirPods. This is the chip that handles fast connectivity, switching between different devices, more efficient battery usage which results in 50% more talk time and hands-free Hey Siri usage.
The wireless charging case is available for $79 and can be used with first generation AirPods too. The new AirPods can be purchased with a standard non-wireless charging capable case for $159. Users can also buy AirPods with the new wireless charging case for $199, which is perhaps the best deal out of the line-up and gives access to all the new features.
Here at VFTP, we absolutely love AirPods. Our AirPods review is still valid even after a year. However, if you already have AirPods, you might want to just opt for the wireless charging case, if you have a bunch of wireless chargers around your home.
P.S. Apple is also providing free engraving for the standard and wireless cases, if you buy from Apple’s online store.
