Apple has announced iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max. These new Pro devices ship with a fast new A13 Bionic chip, Super Retina XDR display, 3 rear-cameras and amazing battery life. They replace iPhone XS and XS Max in Apple’s smartphone line-up and will be available from September 20.
iPhone 11 Pro Specs and Features
Last year’s iPhone XS update was an ‘S’ year update, which means that it used the same design as iPhone X. Even though it had a powerful new A12 processor, along with camera improvements, the design and display were the same. With iPhone 11 Pro, Apple has gone up and beyond and redefined what a ‘Pro’ smartphone can do.
Apple has updated everything including design, display, audio, wireless, cameras and more. Here’s a summary of the major new features in iPhone 11 Pro:
The new smartphones ship in 4 beautiful colors: midnight green, silver, space gray and gold. The material used is super strong textured matte glass, which makes it the strongest glass ever used in a smartphone. Apple demonstrated this feature effectively in their product videos.
The improved durability also brings enhanced IP68 water resistance which means that iPhone 11 Pro can last in water up to 4 meters for 30 minutes.
A blazing fast new A13 Bionic chip powers the new iPhones. It is the fastest chip inside a smartphone at the moment. A13 Bionic consists of 2 performance cores and 4 efficiency cores, which give 20 percent more performance while using 30 percent and 40 percent less power, respectively. The Apple-designed GPU also gives 20 percent more performance, with 40 percent more efficiency.
Apple has also included an upgraded Neural Engine which is also 20 percent faster and uses 15 percent less power. Two new Machine Learning Accelerators support the CPU in processing 1 trillion operations per second, which is astounding.
All these efficiency improvements mean that these new iPhones last longer than ever.
Battery life improvements
iPhone 11 Pro lasts 4 hours longer than iPhone XS while iPhone 11 Pro Max lasts 5 hours longer than iPhone XS Max. To put these numbers into perspective, you can expect the following:
|Video streaming||Audio playback|
|iPhone XS||14 hours||60 hours|
|iPhone 11 Pro||18 hours||65 hours|
|iPhone XS Max||15 hours||65 hours|
|iPhone 11 Pro Max||20 hours||80 hours|
The new devices support fast charging and ship with an 18W power charger, which should charge these devices up to 50% in 30 minutes. Wireless charging is also supported but it’s not clear yet whether wireless charging is faster than before.
Taking their learnings from Apple Display Pro XDR, the company has implemented them in iPhone 11 Pro. The new display tech is called Super Retina XDR Display. Yup.
While the pixel density and resolution are the same as before, along with HDR, P3 and True Tone, Apple has removed 3D Touch and replaced it with Haptic Touch. The two noticeable changes are 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio and 800 nits brightness, which can go up to 1200 nits for HDR. In comparison, 2018 iPad Pro has just 600 nits brightness.
The biggest and most obvious upgrade to the Pro devices are camera upgrades. Instead of the old setup of two lens – one standard and one telephoto – the new 3 camera setup includes:
- 12MP Ultra Wide f2/2.4 camera with 120° field Of view
- 12MP Wide f/1.8 camera
- 12MP Telephoto f2.0 camera with 2x optical zoom
Thanks to the ultra wide lens, 2x optical zoom out is also supported. However, optical image stabilization is available for wide and telephoto lens but not the ultra wide lens. The wide lens now supports 100% Focus Pixels which should allow for improved focusing capabilities. Portrait mode is supported by both wide and telephoto lens, allowing more options to capture beautiful photos. A new Night Mode is also available which allows low light photo capture, pioneered by Google’s Pixel phones.
Apple has improved Smart HDR for photo capture which allows the cameras to extract more detail than before. True Tone flash is also 30 percent brighter than before.
iPhone has always been ahead of the competition in terms of video capture and with iPhone 11 Pro, Apple has really jumped ahead. Apple calls this pro-level video capture. The 3 cameras work together to provide extended dynamic range and cinematic video stabilization at up to 4K resolution. Extend dynamic range now works for video at 60fps, while it used to work at 30fps before in iPhone XS.
Users can smoothly switch between each lens during video capture, without any disruption. A new Audio Zoom feature matches audio with the video framing. QuickTake allows users to instantly start capturing video while in photo capture mode.
iPhone 11 Pro support spatial audio playback along with Dolby Atmos.
Ultra-Wideband chip and Wi-Fi 6
As expected, the new iPhone supports 802.11ax Wi‑Fi 6 with MIMO for the best network connectivity. A new U1 Ultra Wideband chip has also been added for the first time in a smartphone. This chip will allow for spatial awareness and allow supported devices to be found within centimeters of accuracy, compared to Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Ultra Wideband will also allow AirDrop to work just by pointing it to another supported iPhone.
- Face ID is 30 percent faster now and works at larger distances and more angles.
- 18W charging adapter is finally included with iPhone 11 Pro, for fast charge. The fast charge capability is the same as iPhone X and iPhone XS though. Same applies for wireless charging.
- Dual SIM support with eSIM. China and Hong Kong will get devices with physical Dual SIM support.
iPhone 11 Pro Max
There is absolutely no difference in terms of features between the Max and non-Max models, except for screen size and resolution.
iPhone 11 Pro Release Date
Pre-orders will start on September 13, Friday while shipping and in-store availability will start from September 20, Friday.
