iOS 12.1.4 & macOS Mojave 10.14.3 update released with Group FaceTime bug fix

Apple has released updates to iOS and macOS Mojave with fixes for the popular Group FaceTime security flaw, as well as a number of other security fixes related to FaceTime, Live Photos and more. iOS 12.1.4 and macOS Mojave 10.14.3 Supplemental Update are now available as over-the-updates for iPhone, iPad and Macs.

The Group FaceTime bug has been widely covered already. Apple had committed to fixing the issue in a software update right after the bug was discovered. The company had disabled Group FaceTime from server side to ensure that users could not exploit the bug. As expected, Apple has also credited Grant Thompson, the 14-year old teenager, for discovering the FaceTime flaw.

Along with the FaceTime issue, Apple has also included a number of other vulnerabilities that impacted other parts of iOS and could allow hackers to gain root priviliges. Here are all the features that received security fixes in this update:

  • FaceTime
  • Foundation
  • IOKit
  • Live Photos in FaceTime

To update to iOS 12.1.4, head to Settings > General > Software Update on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch. Note that Group FaceTime will not work on iOS 12.1.3 and prior iOS versions. If you are using iOS 12.2 beta, Group FaceTime will not work for your because the beta builds do not have the FaceTime fixes yet. We expect Apple to include the fixes beta 3, likely by next week.

macOS Mojave also got a supplemental update with the same FaceTime fix, however, Apple kept the version number 10.14.3 instead of bumping it up like they did with iOS. The update also includes additional security fixes for the following parts of macOS:

  • FaceTime
  • Foundation
  • Live Photos in FaceTime

Head over to System Preferences > Software Update to download the new supplemental update on your Mac. Group FaceTime will not work on prior macOS versions anymore. If you are using macOS 10.14.4 beta, Group FaceTime will not work on it either as the fixes have not been included yet in the beta builds.
