Apple has released the final version of iOS 11.4 for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. The new point release has a list of major new features: AirPlay 2, HomePod stereo pairing and multiroom audio, Messages in iCloud, and other bug fixes and security updates. All compatible devices should be receiving the update today, however, if you are looking for the IPSW link to manually download and update your devices, you have come to the right place.
iOS 11.4 has a number of new features, most of which were announced last year. AirPlay 2 with HomePod stereo pairing and multiroom audio and Messages in iCloud are the headline features of this release. AirPlay 2 allows the iOS devices to continue streaming audio to compatible speakers, while a different audio stream is active on the device like a call or video. It also enables features like stereo pairing for HomePod and multiroom audio; the latter allowing users to play different audio in different rooms. There will a number of AirPlay 2 compatible speakers releasing soon from the likes of Sonos, Bang & Olufsen and Bose, among others.
Messages in iCloud enables syncing of your messages between iOS and Mac. Deleting a message from one device deletes it from other devices too. This works similar to how something like Facebook Messenger works, but Apple does this with the usual end-to-end encryption that iMessage is known for.
Apple has also fixed a number of other bugs related to Schoolwork app, Messages app crash due to certain characters, out-of-order bug with messages, Safari loading issue with Gmail and Google Drive, Health app and more.
Update without iTunes
The new update can be downloaded over-the-air on your iPhone or iPad. Open Settings > General > Software Update to start downloading the update. Your device might ask for your passcode as a security measure. You would also need to have at least 50% battery charge on your device and must be connected to a wireless network to download and install the update.
Update using iTunes
If you have iTunes on your Windows PC or Mac, you can connect your device using the lightning cable and update. Open iTunes, click Summary in the left sidebar and click on ‘Check for Update‘. Click ‘Download and Update‘ and accept the new terms and conditions. iTunes might ask for your device passcode, enter it to begin the upgrade process.
