Apple has released iOS 11.4.1 for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. The new release ships with USB Restricted mode to protect against brute-force hardware hacks, along with bug and security fixes.
iOS 11.4.1 is nothing more than an intermediary release with a bunch of security fixes and bug fixes packaged together, until iOS 12 hits the market this fall. USB Restricted Mode is perhaps the only stand-out feature in this update, which is aimed at curbing brute-force hardware hacks that have become possible due to devices like GrayKey box. With the new USB Restricted Mode, iPhone disables USB accessories from accessing any data, if the iPhone has not been unlocked for an hour. However, this security fix does not seem bullet-proof as security researchers have already found a workaround by using Apple’s own iPhone dongles. It has been tested and confirmed that Apple’s Lightning to 3.5mm adapter resets the 1 hour countdown, which would essentially allow hackers more time to attempt brute-force hacks.
Whether Apple releases an iOS 11.4.2 update to fix this issue or includes a fix in iOS 12 beta, it is yet to be seen. Until then, make sure to update your iOS device using any of the below methods.
Update without iTunes
The new update is available to download over-the-air on iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. Open Settings > General > Software Update to download the new release. Make sure:
- Your device has at least 50% battery charge, or is plugged into a charger
- You are connected to Wifi
You might be asked for your passcode which is a normal security measure for installing software updates.
Update using iTunes
If you want to create backup while updating to iOS 11.4.1, or do a clean install, you should use iTunes. Make sure that you have the latest iTunes version installed on your Windows PC or Mac. Connect your device using a lightning cable, open iTunes, click Summary in the sidebar and click on ‘Check for Update‘. Click ‘Download and Update‘ and accept new terms and conditions, if any. iTunes might ask for your device passcode, enter it to begin the upgrade process.
