Google is currently testing Android Q as a public beta and it is expected to release as a final version in Q3 2019. Android Q will ship with new features like a dark mode, improved privacy controls, faster security updates for all devices, better parental controls and live captions on selected devices. As expected, Google has also included some new wallpapers in Android Q, which you can download from this page.
Android Q Features
Android Q is currently available as a public beta for 21 devices, including Google’s Pixel and phones from Xiaomi, Huwaei, OnePlus, Oppo, Vivo, LG and more. Google announced this beta at Google I/O 2019, which was one of their shortest events ever.
The company spent some time talking about Android Q’s dark mode, which iOS 13 is also expected to ship with. Android Q also takes deep inspiration from iPhone X’s gesture based navigation. With Android 9 Pie, Google has stumbled on providing a good experience for gesture based usage, but with Android Q, they are simply lifting iPhone X’s feature. Android Q will have the same pill shaped home button, gestures and animation that iPhone X introduced.
Other highlighted features include a focus on permissions and privacy. Like iOS, Android Q will have stricter privacy based controls for all apps. Apps will have to ask for permissions and users will be able to toggle them on or off later as well. Google has also made some adjustments to notifications, allowing users to auto-reply to messages right from notifications. Digital Wellbeing features have also received some updates including a new Focus mode, and improvements to parental controls.
Perhaps the best feature, in my opinion, is live captions. It is actually an accessibility feature which does live transcription of all audio and video on your phone. It works really well, without much delay.
