Apple has released tvOS 12.2.1 for Apple TV HD and 4K models. Based on the version number, the update seems to be a minor one. It is available for all users now as an over-the-air update.
The update is a minor one and not accompanied by any release notes. There is no mention of any security updates either. This update was also released directly to users, instead of going through the usual beta testing process with developers and public beta testers.
To update to tvOS 12.2.1, go to Settings > System > Software Updates > Update Software on your Apple TV. The update is available for both Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K models.
tvOS 12.2 was released almost 2 weeks ago with support for AirPlay 2. Apple also released iOS 12.2, which not only supports AirPlay 2, but also has an updated Remote app with user interface improvements to work with Apple TV and third-party televisions with AirPlay 2 and TV apps. New Siri commands were also introduced to allow users to start media playback on TV using just their voice.
Apple is currently testing tvOS 12.3 beta with a new TV app that the company announced during their March event. The new TV app will include a brand new design and content from sources like HBO, Showtime and EPIX, under the subscription Apple TV+. Apple’s own iTunes movies and TV content will also be available in the new TV app.
With Apple TV+, the company will also be launching its own original content in collaboration with celebrities like Oprah, Steven Spielberg, Jennifer Aniston and many more. During beta testing, users can freely try channels like Starz and Showtime in tvOS 12.3, as well as iOS 12.3. macOS 10.14.5 will also be getting a TV app with the same features as its iOS and tvOS counterparts.
